Question by Ms. Minerva: How many times in the past few weeks has some organization tried to hit you up for a donation?
I think the usual Salvation Army and other reputable organizations who “beg” at Christmas are doing an excellent job and I support them wholeheartedly. Lately though, I have been pounded on via mail, in person, on the TV, on the Internet…to give money to the most bizarre assortment of causes!
Yesterday, I went out on errands, I encountered Salvation Army folks at the entrances to nearly every store I visited and was OK with that. BUT I was also assailed by folks asking for funds for so many other things that I felt as though I was taking a trip through a “flea-market” not composed of vendors, but of folks begging for some cause.
I am totally also not mentioning the vast amounts of panhandlers on the streets…some of whom are actually folks in need….but the rest are professional panhandlers and often have more income than most of us as the results of how effective they have become at cajoling a dollar out of nearly every passer-by.
@ I am appalled that anyone would call a recently-widowed woman and ask for a personal loan because they heard that she got life insurance settlement money. DISGUSTING!

This time of year I just keep a lot of loose change in my coat pocket, drop some in the slot and get on with my life. The ones I do give more to are the Salvation Army and animal shelters of all types. It’s an individual choice.
The “hard-sell” types who call me while I’m in the tub, in bed or eating, get ZIP from me.
