Question by serindipity: What is the name of this small red spice?
I went to my local farmer’s market yesterday (Southern Arizona), and purchased what I thought the gentleman said were “chicla” or “chitla” beans, or something like that. They look like small red peppercorns, and advised that they were in the process of drying, and that I should leave them on a plate on my counter for a couple more days. When I asked what it was used for, he said to use in place of pepper, and crush with fingers, and sprinkle over my food, for example eggs.
When I tried this “bean” on the internet, I find no information, and assume I must have gotten the name wrong. Can anyone help me identify this curious spice?
It is small, about the size of a pea, and round. It is not a chipotle. 🙂
